2008 Rants & Raves

First up for me? I am sick to the edge of death’s doorstep of seeing photos of Madonna wearing a top hat whilst brandishing a black Les Paul in some skimpy little outfit. First of all, Madonna, you are NOT Chris Youlden of Savoy Brown, secondly you are NOT Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin,  and thirdly you are NOT the same age as Britney Spears—so just go put on some decent clothes—you’re creeping me out!

Second on my list is Amy Winehouse—geez, Louise! Didn’t you ever hear of The Beatles? Yeah, Yeah, Yeah—get your skinny ass into rehab already! I guess she was named appropriately.

As for my raves of 08; Mostly Autumn’s Glass Shadows disc was worth the import price, the Pete Best Band proved the critics wrong and rocked super-hard on their American Tour, and Asia’s John Wetton recovered from a long struggle with the bottle as well as heart surgery and then wrote the extraordinary “An Extraordinary Life.”

My current Rave is John Ford’s new solo disc Big Hit In India, which has been playing non-stop in the Cottage Views office since receiving an advance copy a couple of weeks ago. Read review here

Finally, my news report about Led Zep going out on the road without vocalist Robert Plant inspired many varied responses - the most popular being that the boys just shouldn’t do it. A few people had other ideas, including those who knew their music history and voted for the obvious choice of Terry “Super Lungs” Reid taking over the vocal duties (he was Page’s first choice before Plant stepped into the picture in 1968). Another suggestion was Paul Rodgers, but, hey, isn’t he the lead singer of Journey, Queen, Foreigner, and Boston now?

Rant - Bob Dylan's robotic stoic concerts (hey, people don't even smoke weed anymore at his shows)...  All his band members dress alike and Bob just bows after each "unknown" song and says nothing...  Hey, Bob, thanks - you were anti establishment and now you giving your fans "not their money worth" - even so, you still are perhaps the greatest song writer of all time.

Raves - Guns and Roses makes a release (doesn't matter if the songs are good or not) - they were an influential part of music even if only for a brief period...  Comeback of AC/DC - not a bad release even though the songs sound the same.  Led Zep return with or without Plant... Get Sammy Hagar and let Page just wail away...

My favorite Xmas rock song is def "Father Christmas" (The Kinks)

All the best for the season.  In your news you mention Wetton.  He was my best friend and I promoted Asia but we have lost touch.  Do you have any contact details?  Cheers

Thank you so much for your Review & rave on Big Hit In India!  John will be so happy to hear this when he gets back later!  Thank you for making our Christmas even merrier - not only with the Review but the Christmas Radio Show as well.  John's songs aside - enjoyed the whole thing!

Merry Christmas

What about John Ford's "Christmas Rendezvous"?  My fave Xmas song EVER.

Happy Holidays to you!

A note on Terry Reid worth noting.  I ran into him and his wife and daughter this summer.  We talked for a bit, exchanged hugs, and all that!  He got up to do a couple of songs with a jam band.  The comical thing is that he was Keith Richards drinking buddy.  You can see where Keith got a lot of his mannerisms from.  Terry has played with the best musicians in the world.  I love him to death!

Have a great Christmas!

Rants - anything involving Britney Spears

Raves - Ray Davies back on tour, Cirque du Soleil's Love, Willie Nile rockin' out
